ISLAMIC CULTURE and CHRISTIANITY in MALAYSIA AND CHINA
A Remarkable PNME Tour - October 27 - November 14, 2009
|
|
Join in this very special opportunity to meet with religious leaders of different faiths in the Islamic nation of Malaysia. Extend your travel to
include an optional tour of China where we will see the progress and problems of this growing nation.
We will have the great benefit of having Dr. James Shum lead us - a China expert with extensive knowledge of the Christian church in Asia.
A key resource in West Malaysia will be Dr. Hermen Shastri, General Secretary of the Malaysian Council of Churches. Among those we will
meet will be women leaders of an Islamic renewal group seeking to bring dignity to women in the rural areas. This is a very daring and
controversial ministry.
In East Malaysia, which has a large Christian population, the group will visit Sabah Theological Seminary, where we will meet with the
President, faculty and students to explore the challenges faced by the church as a minority with many restrictions.
In addition to rich learning opportunities, the group will travel to spectacular Mt Kota Kinabalu, walk through the world’s oldest rain
forest, swim in the warm waters of the South China Sea, visit the dynamic island city-state of Singapore, and explore ancient Malacca,
where Portuguese influences remain. We will enjoy the fabulous food stalls with exotic treats from many cultures and purchase handmade
batik cloth, a centuries old craft. Our journey is economical, as Southeast Asia food and lodging are not expensive. Try delicious fried
noodles at night in a busy market place and spend $1.00!
An option for 5 days of travel in the Canton Delta area of south China will take us to the fortress where Opium Wars were triggered, and
ships full of opium were burned by Chinese resistant to Western, colonial rule. We’ll see where the first Protestants arrived in China in 1807,
and visit a seminary and several churches.
The group will be limited in size and will include a series of pre-trip orientations where we will learn about the area’s geography, culture,
religions and the struggles and hopes of the many races that make up the region. Our itinerary is filled with opportunities to meet with local
leaders, and visit historic and cultural Destinations. Request a brochure: taffy2traveling@yahoo.com
